Growing up in Cornwall, my role models were always close to home. Having two family members who teach dance fitness, it has always clear to me that my dream would be to follow in their footsteps. At the age of fourteen I enrolled in some local dance classes, and it was here that I discovered my passion for Street Dance and Lyrical. I then went on to study dance at GCSE at Helston Community College, but at the age of sixteen I was already eager to make a start on my dancing career.
I studied for my ‘Exercise to Music’ qualification (ETM – Level 2) at Truro College, which enabled me to begin teaching dance fitness based sessions within the local community. I then continued teaching evening classes whilst studying Contemporary Dance full time at A-level. During this time, I also auditioned for Cornwall Youth Dance Company and successfully became part of the team; deepening my understanding of contemporary based practise and exploring creativity within.
After finishing college, I decided I needed to discover what life had to offer and embarked on a one year volunteering placement in rural Thailand. My placement involved teaching a mixture of English, Dance and extra-curricular activities in a Secondary Welfare school. Living high up in the mountains, in a tiny village called Wawee, is where I discovered what it really meant to live life.
It was here that I worked with challenging groups of teenagers; inspiring and engaging them to interact, whilst promoting self confidence and belief.
On return to the UK, I was eager to ignite my passion for Street Dance and after two weeks of stepping off the plane I was already in London; enrolling on the 'World’s first accredited Street Dance Teacher Training Course' with Urban Strides. Successfully gaining a distinction in the Level 4 Teaching Diploma, I came back to Cornwall and began JD Dance Fitness.
Currently, I offer a variety of classes to a whole range of community groups including:
+ Primary and Secondary schools
+ Youth groups
+ Disability groups
+ Women’s groups
+ And more!
In my experience, dance is the only place that you can find your true self, and lose yourself all at the same time.
